Home at last...

I arrived home last night from Cancun. A wild night in Cancun completed my trip and now I'm in panic mode trying to pack up and get ready to move in/start school on Monday. I'll be posting the rest of the pictures on facebook and snapfish. Check here early next week for the links.

I'm already planning my next trip... SE Asia, South America, Africa... so many countries to go.

You better Belize it!

Today started at 6 am with the longest back tracking ever. I planned the trip perfectly so we would have to do no back tracking but my change in flights kind of ruined that. I spent last night in Punto Gordo which is at the southern end of Belize. I had to get to Cancun by tonight which is on the northern end of the Yucatan Penisula. The bus system in belize is mainly old school buses which take forever to get anywhere. So rather try to bus it up which would have taken two days I decided to fly from the PG to Corozal close to Mexico border. I though it might be a simple flight from PG to Belize City to Corozal. It wasn´t. I had to switch at Belize City and at San Pedro. What they didn´t tell me was that I was going to stop at ever airport a long the way. I can now say I have flow into or out of every airport in Belize except for Belmopan. A total of 7 airports today. I then bused it up to Cancun which took about 7 hours. A really long day.

Punto Gordo was a nice town but I´m glad we only spent one night there. There isn´t even a beach so we sat down on the pier for our daily dose of sun bathing/napping. I´m glad I took the extra week to explore Belize. I love the country but I think I am done with it. No real reason to return. I have seen almost everything I want to and there are so many more countries to go.

To celebrate my last night in Cancun and my last night in Latin America I am going to have another night out in Cancun. And then honestly I never want to come back. I don´t see the appeal of Cancun.
Tomorrow I fly home. Monday I start school.

Relaxing on the Beach

Day three here in Placencia and it is such a relaxing place. During the day the sun a fierce but in the evenings there is an amazing breeze and it is such a pleasent place. Placencia is probably the most expensive place we have been in all of the my travels more so than San Pedro. But we are treating ourselves to a nice food like the four way seafood dinner including amazing lobster, crab, fish and shrimp. Tomorrow we head down to Punto Gurdo we occurring to the guide book is even more chill and laid back than here. I can't even imagine what it is like.

I had forgotten to write about my night in Cancun. I really had no desire to go there but as an American I felt like it was kind of my duty to have on wild night in Cancun. We stayed at the Blue Hostel which according to the guide book: some hostels have a bar, this bar has a hostel. We were there on a tuesday but apparently on Thursday thus Sat the music is so loud you need ear plugs across the street. We went to Cocobongos which is a Vegas like show. It is $40 US for all you can drink and the show. The show was amazing and good fun. And the drinks were flowing. I'll post some photos later on facebook that I think capture the night well. It was a great night in Cancun and now I don't feel like I ever have to go back.

I went to Caye Caulker in March during my vacation there. But it was just a day trip and I didn't really love it. This time I wanted to give it a fair chance. I went two days there and I think the second day was better. While my friends were off diving and snorkeling I went down to the split. A cut in the island caused by a hurricane where all the young travelers hang out. I met a tons of people and it is a really cool place. With a bar/restaurant called the lazy lizard which has a picnic table right in the water and a high dive which after a few belkins or Lizard Juices you might think it is a good idea to try a back flip off of (not me but some one had a very red back). Watching the sun set while sitting on the broken fallen over concert bridge is kind of priceless and something I am sure you could only do in Caye Caulker. I think that rusty bridge nails and parts in the water might not go in America.

Coming to the Southern part of Belize is so different than up north. As soon as we got on the bus heading south past Belmopan the capital the geology changed so much. There were palm tree covered mountains and windy roads. The bus transportation in Belize is old school buses from american which no longer pass emission standards in the states. They are not quite as lovely as the Guatemalan buses which are truly called chicken buses. Where the school buses are painted in beautiful colors and decorations and have a pimped out sound system. And the drivers must be deaf because the music is loud enough for people across town to hear it. And true to the name there are often chicken in the bus and the bus seats which were meant for two small children's behinds usually hold a family of 5.
The belizian bus driver was taking some the curves in the road a little faster than necessary. I was scared for my life at times. But we arrived safely but not in Palcencia. Although the bus claimed to go there it ended up in Mango Grove from which we had a nice long walk with our packs to the boad dock and took a ferry to Palcencia.

Life is nice in Belize. But I think might be ready to leave on Thursday and start school on Monday. I just needed that extra week.

Sand????

I said good bye to my favorite german Sven yesterday. It was sad as we met on our first day in Mexico and traveled with him off and on the whole time. He headed west to Tikal and we headed south to Placencia in Belize. I have been on a search for nice beaches in Belize as they do not exist in the North. I heard they were nicer down south. A lie. Whatever is on the ground can not be called sand but rather large pebbles or something. But i like here. It's supper chill. hardly any other tourist. We are spending three days here and then one in Punto Gordo, the very south of belize. I will fly back north to the Mexican Belize border and then bus it 6 hours to Cancun for my flight on Thursday.

I'm i stayed longer here but I want to apologize to everyone I made plans with and then completely blew off by not coming home. :( I'll make it up to you soon.

Not coming home...

While Margisel took a bus to the Cancun airport I took a bus to Belize. I will be coming on the 2nd of August just in time to start school on the 6th. That's more than enough time to pack up.. right?Since Cancun we took a bus to the border town of Corozal in Belize. As soon as we arrived in this small fisherman village, you could tell how more friendly the people were. We had an amazing meal for $3 for the three of us. We stayed at this guest house where the staff and the owners are the friendliest people. They have in their yard a famous Nimm Tree which claims to cure everything from AIDS and cancer, be birth control among other things. We had some tea made from it and despite adding 4 huge scoops of sugar it was the bitterest thing I have ever taken. Since I don't really have any aliments I can't tell you if it works. Altho one of the guys I am travelling with had a cold sore, something the tree claims to heal and it looks like it is getting better.
We took a 2 hour ferry from Corozal to the island town of San Pedro which I spent sometime there in March. San Pedro has such a cool vibe and I really love it. We were lucky enough to catch the chicken drop again. A once a week event where you buy a number on the ground and some one drops a chicken in to the pen and what ever number the chicken "drops" on you win money. I dropped the chicken again this time and tried to drop it on our number. But I missed by one square and it did it's business on the next square. Same as last time.
We took a ferry over to Caye Caulker two spend two days. I don't understand why people love this island more than San Pedro. It's kinda dead and San Pedro had such a better vibe. Tomorrow we head back to the main land to explore southern Belize.

Juliana is not coming home yet!

She managed to change her flight and I think is coming back around the 2nd of August... I didn't leave her on her own though, she has two very nice young gringos looking after her! I would have stayed longer but my travels continue in Italy from tomorrow. I'm sure Juliana will get in touch when she gets internet again.
